Industry Expertise  /  Manufacturing

Manufacturing is consolidating. Position your business before you decide to sell.

Australia’s manufacturers are being reshaped by succession, reshoring and reinvestment — and buyers are paying premiums for the well-run few. Whether an exit is three years away or now, the groundwork you lay today sets the price you achieve later.

The market right now

A selective market rewarding well-prepared manufacturers.

Australian mid-market M&A stayed active through 2025 into 2026, even as headline volumes softened. Industrials sit among the busiest sectors, and the great majority of deals fall below $50m — the owner-operator segment. Buyers are more selective and diligence is deeper, but disciplined, well-governed manufacturers with earnings visibility continue to attract trade acquirers, private equity and offshore interest at firm multiples.

Ageing ownership
Around a third of small-business owners are 55 or older; manufacturing’s low succession rates drive a steady pipeline of sales.
Foreign appetite
Overseas buyers reached their highest share of Australian deals in a decade, often paying premiums for reliable earnings.
Sovereign capability
Defence investment and the National Reconstruction Fund are lifting demand for onshore advanced-manufacturing capacity.

Two conversations we have every week.

Most owners we speak with sit in one of two positions. Both benefit from preparation made well before a process begins.

Growth & exit planning

You’re building toward a future sale.

If a sale is three to five years out, this is when value is built. We help you diversify the customer base, lift margins, contract recurring revenue, deepen management beneath the owner and modernise plant and systems — so the business is demonstrably transferable, not dependent on you, when the time comes.

We run a discreet, structured process: positioning the business, identifying and approaching credible trade and private-equity buyers, managing competitive tension, and guiding diligence and negotiation through to completion — protecting confidentiality and your team throughout.

What actually drives the value of a manufacturing business.

Real value is earned in the detail. These are the factors buyers scrutinise — and the ones we help you strengthen before you go to market.

Customer diversification

Broad, contracted revenue with no single account dominating de-risks earnings and lifts value.

Recurring & contracted work

Long-term supply agreements and repeat orders give buyers the earnings visibility they pay for.

Plant, capacity & condition

Well-maintained, modern equipment with headroom to grow supports a stronger multiple.

Management depth

A capable team that runs the business without the owner proves it is transferable.

Niche capability & IP

Proprietary processes, accreditations and hard-to-replicate expertise command a premium.

Systems & automation

Documented processes, quality systems and automation signal a scalable, lower-risk operation.

“The businesses that command the best price are the ones prepared long before they go to market.”
